My friends who enjoy WoW tend to play together, this probably increases their enjoyment more.

I really wish Blizzard, who can clearly make a decent game in most genres they take a hand to, would actually make a single player rpg. I'd be far happier to play that than WoW. It always pissed me off that I'd destroy the evil warlord of GRAH and then everyone act like nothings happened.

And I agree, online people are arseholes. To be fair, this hardly unusual, it is frankly painful playing online on anything involving serious team co-operation for the first time, because everyone will bitch about how bad you are.

Unfortunately, no multiplayer game is going to be able to rise above that pesky "human problem" wherein other people are, by and large, assholes when removed from all consequence. You could say that this just pulls down the whole MMO genre, but I'd go further and include all online multiplayer games.

You're right, the game is a lot more fun if you play it with people you know. It IS possible to develop reliable friends in the game, it's just a hit-and-miss process. My experience has been that people on RP servers are a lot more casual/friendly on average (presumably because they're there for the social component). If you don't like/want to RP you won't be unwelcome so long as you don't mind other people doing it. Of course, this far into your experiment I'd imagine you're not interested in switching servers.

As for the single-player game, if you find that it's to your liking you CAN play it offline, it's called "Diablo". :)

I had similar experiences with Guild Wars - a very fun game, but having to share with other people is just a nuisance. Would have happily played it to completion single player, but it's almost impossible to achieve anything on your own after the early game.

No, Planescape: Torment is an excellent single-player RPG. Fallout is an excellent single-player RPG. World of Warcraft is a frigging horrible single-player RPG.

Just hoping you come to your senses so you won't waste $15 a month.
